History and prestige of the faculty

The All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography named after S.A. Gerasimov was founded in 1919 as the world's first higher educational institution specializing in cinematography. The Acting Faculty appeared among the first and has graduated over 3,000 actors in more than 100 years.

It's important to understand: VGIK trains film actors, so requirements for appearance and photogenic qualities are higher than at theatrical universities.

Admission stages

Admission to VGIK takes place in five stages from May to July:

Stage 1: Document submission

Stage 3: First round of creative competition

Stage 4: Second round of creative competition

Stage 5: Third round and enrollment

Screen tests are a VGIK innovation. Applicants film short scenes on professional cameras, allowing assessment of photogenic qualities and on-camera work.

Educational program

First year: Fundamentals

Second year: Skill development

Practice: first student films featuring students.

Third year: Specialization

Projects: participation in course films from the directing faculty.
